What happens when the femme fatale gets to tell her own story?

Bittersweet Sovereignty is a three-part textile series that reimagines the femme fatale as “SHE” is no longer a muse confined by projection, but the author of her own story.

The work grew from my frustration with the women I watched being portrayed in popular culture growing up. Confidence, ambition, sensuality and refusal rarely seemed enough to make a woman a villain; she also had to be cruel, manipulative or heartless. It was as though an unapologetic woman could not simply be complicated, powerful and still capable of tenderness.

Bittersweet Sovereignty asks what remains when we separate female autonomy from villainy.

Hey There, Delilah!

The first chapter embraces the mythology of the femme fatale. SHE commands her sensuality with unapologetic grace. Night becomes her stage, where glamour, enigma and desire reign.

The Zenith of Her

The second chapter steps beyond the constructed fantasy. The iconic beauty chooses anonymity and ease. Vibrant, playful and unguarded, yet carrying a quiet nostalgia, SHE exists without needing to perform her power for anyone.

Bittersweet Sovereignty - Lino Prints

The third chapter carries the narrative into heritage-led making. Developed through lino and block printing on deadstock textiles, it extends the visual language of the first two collections through slower, tactile processes.

Bringing contemporary textile experimentation into conversation with heritage printing allows the series to continue evolving rather than reaching a fixed conclusion. Like the woman at its centre, Bittersweet Sovereignty remains unfinished, contradictory, changing and entirely her own.
